Linking to documents

Last updated: 27 February 2024

DOCman comes with an editor button plugin, DOClink ( more info). This plugin adds a "Document" button to the editor and allows to insert links to DOCman documents, categories and menu items in Joomla articles and other content that uses the Joomla editor. All Joomla core and third party editors are supported by DOCLink.

  1. Click the Document button in the editor toolbar.
  2. Select a menu item and category in the sidebar.
  3. Select a document in the list.
  4. Click Insert document link.

Note: You need to make sure you have created a menu item for DOCman. Without a menu item you will not be able to select a document.

FAQ's

What if I do not want to publish a DOCman menu item on my site?

In this scenario you can create a hidden menu and add your menu item there.

Go to your DOCman menu item, open the DOCman tab. Find the Document titles link to option and change it from Document file to Document details.

Your links will now take you to the document details page instead of directly downloading your document .

Go to your DOCman menu item, open the DOCman tab. Find the Open download links in a new tab option and change it to Yes.

Your links will now open in a new tab.

How do I force all my documents to download and not to be displayed inside the browser?

By default DOCman will let the browser decided how to handle the file, if the browser is capable of displaying the file he will do so. For example most modern browsers today can display PDF files.

If you want to download files directly you can do so by enforcing this behavior. Go to your DOCman menu item, open the DOCman tab. Find the Force download all files option and change it to Yes.

Each menu item in Joomla has an id, the so called Itemid. This uniquely identifies the menu item for which Joomla will load the different configuration options.

Modules, templates, menu item options and access permissions are all related to the Itemid.

DOCman automatically adds the Itemid when you insert a link. By doing so the linked page will render perfectly.
